In the paintings of the stock exchange in Alekos Hofstetters series CASH FLOW, the actor
in the system of global capital markets is hardly visible. At his workplace, he fuses with
the surrounding architecture, which reflects the structures of communications and finance;
this is in contrast to the presentation of Alan Greenspan as a demiurg. Yet Hofstetter’s
portrait of Greenspan reveals his aura of individuality and influence over global finance
to be artificial, a ruse maintained for the media and public. This illusion of individual
action masks the current nature of capital, which is autonomous. br>

In addition to drawing from media representations, Hofstetter has also used photographs
of Andreas Gursky as models for CASH FLOW. In the process of reworking these existing
materials he reduces their content, eliminating all destinctive characteristics.
His linear style connects employees with their workplaces, thus irreversibly
incorporating man, machine and space.
