Kunststudium an der Cheltenham and Gloucester School of Higher Education ab.
Mitgründer des Projektraumes forever and a day Büro. Einzelausstellungen 2003:
The joy of stability, Pugh Pugh, Berlin und Behind the Swamp in der Simultanhalle, Köln.
The British artist Ben Cottrell creates his work in direct
relation to the given space. His installations are composed of materials
from DIY Stores, found objects and elements from previous works. His
installations are rich in references to popular culture, recombining
forms and figures to construct spaces in which the limits between the authentic
and the artificial are blurred. On first impression the stucture of the work
appears chaotic and improvised. However as the viewer experiences the space,
it unfolds to reveal its artifice. Cottrell lays narrative traces which are
simultaniously undercut by their obvious fabrication. The interrelation of
raw materials and theatrical imagery combine to create a situation that oscillates
between fact and fiction, thus creating an atmosphere of uncertainty.
